I had a liver and kidney transplant in 1990 at the London Health Science Centre in Ontario, Canada. The kidney disease was MPGN. They never figured out the reason for the liver damage and so call it "cryptogenic". Currently I am the list for another liver as it is now it has cirrhosis.
For immunosuppression I am taking 5 mg prednisone daily and 50 mg cyclosporine neoral twice daily.
Other problems I have had:
- gout: with very sore knees and feet and elbow - is much better since I've been taking colchicine and allopurinol
- warts: on hands mostly, but also on legs and feet - having been increasing everr since transplant - nothing seems to help
- osteoporosis: mild and am taking calcium and calcitriol. Probably from taking prednisone.
- pancytopenia: another word for low blood cell levels including white cells, red cells, platelets and immunoglobulin. Was taking Aranesp and Neupogen, This problem was at least partially caused by using Sirolimus. Lately, it has gotten a lot better.
- diabetes: cause by using Tacrolimus which also gave me very sore legs and seizures involving only my vision (did not lose control of my body or awareness). Is completely gone now.
- diarrhea and nausea: some doctors said this was from bacterial overgrowth in my gut. Have taken lots of antibiotics over the years which seemed to work for a while. This has been a lot better lately and am not taking antibiotics now.
Currently I am on disability as I am often very tired from the liver disease. I have worked in the financial risk management field for many years doing software development.
I am married with two children 11 and 13 yrs. We are originally from Canada but moved to the Twin Cities, MN, USA for my job.

Hello Gordon, How nice to meet another liver/kidney recipient. I am just 2 years out from my transplant. So far so good. I have Hep C but it's not an issue right now. I got my transplant at Georgetown. I live in Reston VA.
Do you work? I still need a nap everyday, so I only work part-time.
