Under New Law, Kidney Transplant Priorities Will Shift

If the new changes pass to the transplant recipient list priorities, organs will be allocated to those who are expected to live longest and to individuals who are within 15 years of the age of the donor. Only around 17,000 Americans actually receive the required transplant they need each year, and nearly 5,000 people die waiting for their transplant.

The current established policy disregards age and health status, and only accounts for where the patient is in line, which right now is… Continue

NYPH Patients and Surgeons Run 2010 New York Marathon

Timothy Sweeney, who had double lung transplant surgery just one year ago, ran with his transplant surgeon, Joshua Sonett, MD. Timothy and Dr. Sonett ran together, stopping at mile 16 to visit with Dr. Sonett’s family, and again at the finish line to visit with Timothy’s family. According to Timothy, a 33-year-old personal trainer who has cystic fibrosis, “It was an amazing, incredible…

Where you live drives wait for liver transplants

WASHINGTON — Doctors dropped another bomb soon after telling Matthew Rosiello it was time for a liver transplant: The 21-year-old isn't likely to get one any time soon in his home state of New York. Consider traveling to Ohio, they advised, where the wait's a lot shorter.

Where you live plays a big role in how sick you are, and how long you wait, before getting a scarce liver transplant — if you survive long enough. Now the network that runs the U.S. organ transplant system is…

Hispanics And Asians Less Likely To Receive Liver Transplants

Researchers at the University of Michigan and Arbor Research Collaborative for Health, both in Ann Arbor, have identified geographic variation as a key factor accounting for disparities in access to liver transplantation among racial and ethnic groups. Full details appear in the September issue of Liver Transplantation, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American Association… Continue

Hello, I'm trying to reach a group of transplant recipients and/or persons on waiting list to take a research survey online or via phone regarding the emotions associated with transplant, how you seek information, how you choose a physician, etc. It would be part of a broader overall healthcare study we conduct every year to stay abreast on heathcare issues. Are there listservs that exist or other ways to ask persons to participate? Of course each survey participant would receive a monetary incentive. Please guide me on how to gather participants for this important initiative. My email is cscholer@magid.com

Gustavo -- yes, I'm from UNOS. I am the Assistant Director of Communications. We are treading gently into "newer media" with Facebook pages recently added for our Transplant Living site and National Donor Memorial. That's how I found out about this group. I stay pretty busy but may check in now and then -- certainly let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer.

Thank you so much Aharon. I would be happy to discuss this with Gustavo. I do have to bring every idea to the board. I have just been extremely busy with my teaching job lately and with my daughter. My gmail is KEFlynn@gmail.com. That is my work email address but I simply have not had time to check this account much. At work we have a state-wide conference for all teachers of the visually impaired and blind, rehabilitation workers for Division of Services for the Blind, and Orientation and Mobility specialists at the end of April. I am more likely to check my gmail during the week. I have to enter every email manually from this account and it won't let me cut and paste or I would have sent more people to the site.

I would be very excited by more international collaboration.
