Quality Of Life Following Liver Transplant Influenced By Alcohol Abuse History

A history of alcohol abuse significantly impacts quality of life for patients after liver transplant, according to researchers at Henry Ford Hospital.

"Transplant recipients with alcoholic cirrhosis experienced less improvement in physical quality of life and reported greater pain and physical limitations than non-alcoholics after transplant surgery," says Anne Eshelman, Ph.D., Henry Ford Behavioral Health Services, lead author of the study.

Under New Law, Kidney Transplant Priorities Will Shift

If the new changes pass to the transplant recipient list priorities, organs will be allocated to those who are expected to live longest and to individuals who are within 15 years of the age of the donor. Only around 17,000 Americans actually receive the required transplant they need each year, and nearly 5,000 people die waiting for their transplant.

The current established policy disregards age and health status, and only accounts for where the patient is in line, which right now is… Continue

Where you live drives wait for liver transplants

WASHINGTON — Doctors dropped another bomb soon after telling Matthew Rosiello it was time for a liver transplant: The 21-year-old isn't likely to get one any time soon in his home state of New York. Consider traveling to Ohio, they advised, where the wait's a lot shorter.

Where you live plays a big role in how sick you are, and how long you wait, before getting a scarce liver transplant — if you survive long enough. Now the network that runs the U.S. organ transplant system is…

Cloned Organs In the Near Future. No Rejection, No Drugs.

(Bob Aronson, the author of this blog, received a new heart on August 21, 2007)

People who need an organ transplant face two hurdles; one is the limited availability of organs and the second is the possibility that if you do get an organ your body might reject it.

First let us discuss the donor issue. Since the national Organ Transplant Act of 1984 The United States has depended on the…

Hispanics And Asians Less Likely To Receive Liver Transplants

Weekly Infusion

Just had my latest infusion of Albumin and Lasix on Wednesday. Thursday I slept for 15 hours! It always takes the wind out of me the day after, but normally by Friday I am feeling tons better, even better than before I had the infusion. My labs came back pretty stable setting my Meld at 13. I really hate seeing it drop again during my hospital stays. I went into the hospital at 23 and after a week of pills and IVs they get it to go down. Seems kind of pointless. How am I ever going to get a… Continue

Heroes Of Hope

HEROES OF HOPE

by Ashley Tenczar Curran

I think it was the first time that I heard the words..”He needs a liver transplant”, that it all sort of sunk in to my brain, and I thought I had a grip on the situation.

That was before those words went on a journey through my soul, and landed in my heart.

“Transplant...Transplant...”

The words echoed through my mind, and I came to grips pretty quickly, as I had been a…

shoulder pain

my shoulder needs to be xrayed soon..hurry? necrosis is necrosis, my discomfort has gotten too uncomfortable. Similar to the pain before, in my hips and knee. Onset? It's not a weight bearing joint/bone, so the need to compensate for the pain in my daily mobility isn't urgent, noticeable. The discomfort wakes me, so that is an issue I need to address. I'm going to make a Ortho appt after I submit my blog. Thanks for letting me share my moment/time with all of you. I hope my blog finds everyone… Continue
